Carrels at Marston Science Library: Carrel Policies

Policies

  1. Qualified applicants
    1. Marston study carrels are for UF graduate students, faculty, postdocs, and those writing dissertations in STEM fields only.
    2. Students in other disciplines should refer to their corresponding libraries for study spaces.
    3. Students must be currently registered for classes to be issued a carrel.
  2. Assignment
    1. Students should apply for a carrel only once per semester. Multiple applications do not increase the likelihood of carrel assignment or speed up the process.
    2. Carrel assignment may take two weeks or longer, especially at the beginning of the fall semester. Many carrel applications are submitted during this period, with only one library staff member to process them.
    3. Students will be notified via email if they are assigned a carrel.
    4. Carrel keys may be picked up at the main floor service desk during operating hours. A UF ID is required.
    5. If an assigned key is not picked up within two weeks, the carrel will be reassigned to another patron.
    6. Carrels are assigned randomly. Requests for specific carrels will not be honored. Once assigned, carrels may not be changed unless there is a maintenance or accessibility issue.
  3. Accessibility: Students requiring accessible carrels should email mslcarrels@uflib.ufl.edu upon application submission.
  4. Loan period & renewals
    1. The carrel loan period is from date of issue through the end of the spring semester.
    2. Carrel users will receive email notifications reminding them of the due date.
    3. Carrel keys may be renewed for the summer by visiting the service desk in person in the 2-week period before the due date.
    4. Keys may also be relinquished at the circulation desk any time prior to the due date.
  5. Valuables
    1. Marston Science Library is not responsible for items inside study carrels.
    2. Carrels are not secure lockers, and students are advised against storing personal or valuable belongings in them.
    3. Carrel users should not leave laptops, phones, or other valuable belongings unattended, even briefly.
  6. Prohibited items
    1. Food or drink of any kind
    2. Any library books/journals not checked out to the carrel user
    3. Phones or any other devices that can emanate sound/vibration or be otherwise disruptive
    4. Valuable or expensive items such as laptops, iPads, etc.
  7. Inspection
    1. Carrels are subject to regular inspection by library staff.
    2. Food or drink stored in carrels will be disposed of.
    3. Electronics (phones, laptops, etc.) will be held at the circulation desk.
    4. Library material not checked out to the carrel user will be removed.
    5. Violation of these rules may result in revocation of carrel privileges.
  8. Fines
    1. Lost keys will be assessed a $35 fee.
    2. A $100 lock replacement fee will be charged for keys not returned at the end of the loan period.
  9. Damage or disrepair (broken lock or door, vandalism, etc.) should be reported immediately to mslcarrels@uflib.ufl.edu.
