Images and Visual Research: Still Images

Finding Images

Many libraries, archives, and museums have digital collections available, while other collections of value to your research may require you to visit the library, archive, or museum to see the resource in person. Below are a selection of resources with digitized image collections. Both Archive Grid and the Digital Public Library of America are great tools to identify collections! If you need help locating images or image collections, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. ARTstor is also a great place to start and supports the study of Art & Architecture, the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Sciences.

Remember that it is your responsibility to both understand the copyright and usage rules related to the images you select and to properly cite the images.

You can also search for images specifically in the Avery Index of Periodicals by using the Advanced Search and limiting the Document Types to the types of images or drawings for which you are searching.

History

In Academic Search Premier, you can also search for images. In the blue menu bar at the top of the page, click the drop menu More and click Images to search the image collection.
