How to Locate Eligible ADA-Compliant Files from HathiTrust in the Florida SUS system

University of Florida  students, faculty and staff members that are registered with the UF Disability Resource Center may obtain ADA-compliant PDF files of any materials available in HathiTrust. Please note that these files cannot be supplied to any student, faculty, staff or other patron without first verifying that they are registered with the Disability Resource Center. This is part of our contract agreement with Hathitrust. 

To determine if a book is in the SUS library system and available for download from HathiTrust, please follow the steps below.  If you are unable to navigate the system and need assistance, please contactlib-ada-ht@uflib.ufl.edu, or call 352-273-2535. 

TO DO A SUBJECT SEARCH FOR AVAILABLE MATERIAL USING THE STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM CATALOG: 

1. Go to the SUS library catalog, at this link: http://union.discover.flvc.org/ux.jsp

2. For this example, do a search using the keywords  Florida natural history, and use the pull-down menu to limit the search by Subject heading, as shown:

3. On the left hand side of the results page is a column with the header "Narrow results by". At the bottom of the list is a header called Subcollection. Under Subcollection, click on the link for Accessible Resources, as shown below:

4. A new list of search results will be generated. Any of these items will be available as ADA-compliant full text files via HathiTrust.  To access the form to request materials, go to THIS LINK  .

TO SEARCH FOR A SPECIFIC BOOK TITLE: 

1. Go to the SUS library catalog:http://union.discover.flvc.org/ux.jsp .

2. Choose the “Advanced Search” option.

3. For this example, we will search for the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien. Enter the title in the first box, and use the pulldown menu to select Author. In the second search box, type the author's name and use the pulldown menu to select author

4. On the left hand side of the results page is a column with the header "Narrow results by". At the bottom of the list is a header called Subcollection. Under Subcollection, click on the link for Accessible Resources, as shown below:

5. A new list of search results will be generated. Any of these items will be available as ADA-compliant full text files via HathiTrust.  

Enhanced access to digital versions of books in the HathiTrust repository (both those that are publicly accessible and those that are in copyright) is available to University of Florida students, faculty and staff whose disabilities do not allow them to use printed books. Patrons that are registered with the University of Florida Disability Resource Center may make requests for materials via an online form. Once the library staff has verified that the patron is registered with the Disability Resource Center, they will contact HathiTrust, obtain the material, and email the file to the patron.
