ASSIGNMENT

BIOGRAPHY WRITING ASSIGNMENT FOR AMH 3423

You are to write a biography or obituary for a famous Floridian. The name of the person will be supplied to you by Prof. Noll (see sample list at right for possibilities).  You should include at least one resource from UF Special Collections/P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History in your assignment. Check with Prof. Noll about length and format.

Research Behavior in Special Collections

When working in Special Collections:

  • Do not bring food or drink into the rare books room.
  • Sign in at the desk. Lock up all knapsacks in the lockers provided.
  • It is a good idea to WASH YOUR HANDS before and after using any materials.  Keeping your hands clean before will prevent you from transferring dirt or oils onto the materials. Wash you hands afterwards because old books and papers are dusty and dirty from age and use - you should wash up.
  • TO LEARN HOW TO SAFELY HANDLE RARE AND FRAGILE MATERIALS, VIEW THE VIDEO BELOW -
  • "Handling Special Collection Materials"
  • In general, you should always leave books on the table, and properly propped or supported. Turn pages carefully. Keep loose papers in order - you are responsible for maintaining the arrangement of papers in folders.  Do not attempt to remove staples or fasteners - ask library staff for help. It is not necessary to wear gloves - EXCEPT in cases where you are working with photographs, slides, or anything glossy where you will leave fingerprints.
  • Use laptops and pencils for research.
  • Do not mark write on materials or mark you place sticky notes.
  • Ask permission from the desk monitor before copying or scanning materials.
  • There is a flatbed scanner and also a KIC book-friendly scanner in the room. Staff can help you with their use.  You are also welcome to take photos with phone cameras.
  • The desk monitor and the archivists in Special Collections are there to provide help.  Ask for their assistance if you need it.
