Anthropology Library Guide

Many ethnographic videos, with scrolling transcripts and other features for making clips and playlists, are available to UF faculty, staff, students, and instructors. If you have additional resources you would like to see here, please send me an email (gjmahar@ufl.edu).

Starting as a group of anthropologists and filmmakers interested in producing ethnographic films, today visual anthropology casts a much more inclusive net.  There are primatologists who use visual materials to study their subjects.  Archaeologists recording artifacts using different films (infra-red, 3-D, etc.).  Cultural anthropologists studying advertising in different cultures.  And many working with photographs: producing images in new relationships to traditional ethnographic texts (making the texts secondary to the image!), giving cameras to groups of people, or studying images produced by other cultures.  And this is only what I can think of off the top of my head.  Of course, we are still producing ethnographic films, and heatedly discussing what makes a film ethnographic versus a documentary (good luck with that one).  Where I did my master's degree, visual anthropology was given status as a fifth sub-discipline in anthropology and as a visual anthropologist myself, I am giving this area a page of its own.  Hey, its my guide!
