Research Data Management at UF: Storage

This is a guide on resources available at the University of Florida and beyond on research data management. It includes information about tools for data management planning, data and file sharing, metadata and data standards, and data storage.

UF Research Computing Storage

GatorCloud offers free self-service storage including One Drive @UF and UF Dropbox for Faculty and Staff.

UF Research Computing managed storage:

  • ResVault: Appropriate for restricted data, no size limit, replicated storage.
  • HiPerGator: See below for restricted data, no size limit, allows for easy collaboration.

HiPerGator use with PHI and FERPA data

HiPerGator

The University of Florida supercomputer is a cluster that includes the latest generation of processors and offers nodes for memory-intensive computation. HiPerGator’s high-performance storage systems can be accessed from diverse interfaces, including Globus, UFApps for Research, and other tools.

HiPerGator is the University of Florida supercomputer. It is approved for data and processing of open data. In order to work with Protected Health Information (PHI) or Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) restricted data follow the policies and procedures described here for PHI and for FERPA data. The process includes the requirement to submit a request.

Storage Best Practices

Always store an uncorrected (the original data set) data file version or master version:

  • Do not make any corrections to this file
  • Make corrections using a scripted language where possible so that all corrections are documented
  • Consider making your original data file read-only
  • Limit access to this file

Whenever possible, use institutional resources.

Regular back-ups protect against accidental data loss which may occur because of:

  • hardware failure
  • software or media faults
  • virus infection or malicious hacking
  • power failure
  • human error

CTSI Biorepository

The CTSI Biorepository "provides high-quality biospecimens; biospecimen processing services; and an extensively monitored storage facility. It collects biospecimens that can be used for research purposes by any investigator with IRB-approved protocols." Some of its services:

  • Biospecimen storage, via CO2-backed-up freezers and reliable around-the-clock virtual-monitoring systems
  • Biorepository library specimen retrieval for investigator studies (fresh, fresh-frozen, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue, DNA, RNA, plasma/serum, buffy coat)
  • Nucleic acid extraction and quality-assessment services
