What can a Liaison Librarian do?

As your Liaison Librarian Rae can:

Meet with you in person, by phone or over e-mail to discuss any of your information needs,
    including copyright & bibliographic citations
Provide information consultations to assist students, faculty & staff with literature searching
    and other information gathering
Develop and teach library orientations or information-related classes based on your
Present at department meetings or journal clubs
Create customized online  tutorials for use by on- and off-campus faculty, staff & students
Conduct literature searches, including ones for IACUC and Systematic Reviews for HSC
   faculty & staff
Take your recommendations or suggestions electronic and print resources for the HSC
    Libraries' collection
Collaborate with and assist you on publications and grants
 Assist PIs or their designates with NIH Compliance procedures
 Assist with data management

Current Information

Rae Jesano currently is the librarian liaison to the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the College of Medicine.  As the librarian liaison, she is responsible for collection management for these two related subjects in addition to acting as the primary library contact person for these two groups.

General activities:

  • Teaches the NIH public access policy class, drug information workshops , including one on materials available for free.
  • Teaches searching PubMed, Web of Science, Endnote, and Refworks and other databases

College of Pharmacy activities:

  • Embedded in Foundations courses for the WPPD and MTM MS distance programs
    • Students are required to watch her library orientation videos
    • Monitors the discussion boards for these courses
  • Works closely with the COP IT Department on remote access, video, and Access Pharmacy issues and iPhone/iPad/iDevice apps
  • Negotiated a cooperative purchase of Natural Standard
  • Obtained the free version of the online USP/NF
  • Is a member of the College's Curriculum Committee
  • Consults with faculty and students on the use of Endnote Web and Refworks
  • Creates tutorials  for the pharmacy students on searching PubMed, and using the library
  • Orients new faculty and students to the library
    •   Participates in the orientation of new students
  • Provides literature searches for faculty and postdocs
  • Involved in Postdoc and Graduate student 
  • Informs faculty, students and staff of changes in library policies, services and procedures
  • Active member of AACP: Library and Information Science Section
    • Contributes to the Basic Resources List
    • Past section officer
  • Created Google Documents listing databases (UF) and free websites that are useful for pharmacy students.

 Previous Employment

Reference Librarian, Rowland Medical Library, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS: 1991 - 1995.
Medical Librarian, All Children's Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL: 1995 - 2000. 

Rae began her employment with the UF HSC Libraries in 1980 in the Circulation department, later moving into the Reference section as the department's Library Technical Assistant. She continued to work full time at the HSC Libraries while she pursued her Masters of Science in Library Science at  Florida State University.

After receiving her degree, Rae left in 1991 to accept her first professional position at Rowland Medical Library at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she spent four years as a reference librarian. She returned here in October of 2000 after spending five years as a hospital librarian at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. During her time at All Children's, she worked closely with  the clinicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, and  students  providing them with information for patient care.
