Using generative AI to help you search for information on a topic?

Here are some tips for verifying information from AI tools such as ChatGPT, CoPilot, Gemini, Perplexity, etc. Some are the same recommendations that you would use with a traditional web search.

Fact Check / Cross Reference / Lateral Read

  • What information from the AI you want to verify?
  • Search for that information using a library search tool (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, DimensionsPrimo Search, etc.) or even Google or Google Scholar.
  • Locate at least two reliable sources that would be able to verify that information. Review them critically.

Bias

  • Are there other perspectives that might be missing from the AI's response?
  • Read the response with a critical eye and consider ideas that might be missing. Consider the model that the AI is using.
  • Consider your own bias. Ensure that you craft your prompt(s) objectively in order to retrieve accurately reflect what you want to know. Avoid leading language.
