The National Military Establishment was established in July 1947 as a replacement for the Department of War, until it was replaced in August 1949 by the Department of Defense.

Center of Excellence

The University of Florida serves as an Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) Center of Excellence for documents issued by the U.S. National Military Establishment.

As such UF will 1) Actively replace damaged or lost pieces ; 2) Seek to fill holes in the collection ; 3) Provide active preservation for the collection ; 4) Catalog the pieces that they own on OCLC and identify them as the archival copy ; 5) Participate in GPO’s program to set holdings on OCLC for Regionals free of charge ; and 6) Participate in the ASERL union catalog (Kudzu) and ILL/Document Delivery agreements.
