METABOLOMICS:  This discipline aims to understand how the complete set of metabolites are regulated in an organism and to identify metabolite profile differences between health and disease. 

The picture shown in the introduction box depicts the citric acid cycle, which is a metabolic process that plays a role in generating the metabolite adenosine triphosphate (ATP).  ATP is probably a metabolite that is familiar to all since this is the cell's energy currency.  ATP level fluctuates and it is broken down extremely rapidly when blood circulation to tissue is diminished.
