Publishing with Florida OJ: Working in Florida OJ

An introduction and resources to publishing with Florida Online Journals for UF scholars. Florida OJ is an open source digitial publishing platform produced by the Public Knowledge Project. UF scholars have access and technical support via FALSC.

What is Florida OJ?

Florida Online Journals (Florida OJ) is the statewide installation of Open Journal Systems (OJS), an open source digital publishing platform developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). Florida OJ provides online hosting for academic journals, with support for each stage of the publishing process. There are a number of ways to publish a journal through Florida OJ. Some journals use Florida OJ to promote open access to their online archives, while others use the system to manage submissions, reviews, and final publication.

Through OJS, Florida OJ has a highly configurable system for editorial workflows. Features include:

  • Online author submission
  • Blind, double-blind, or open peer-review processes
  • Online management of copyediting, layout, and proofreading
  • Delegation of editorial responsibilities according to journal sections
  • Management of publication schedule and ongoing journal archiving
  • Customizable presentation features
  • Multilingual interface supporting ten languages
  • Support for a variety of reader tools, such as RSS feeds and share buttons

As part of the commitment to increasing open access to research, the UF Libraries support with publishing activities on Florida OJ through the LibraryPress@UF. Please contact Chelsea Johnston, Scholarly Publishing and Repository Librarian, for more information.

Florida OJ's Site Host

Florida OJ is the statewide installation of the Public Knowledge Project's Open Journal Systems (OJS), hosted by the Florida Academic Library Services Collaborative (FALSC). See the Florida OJ Quick Start Guide for more information from our site hosts at FALSC.

Recommended Journal Policies

The LIbraryPress@UF offers recommendations for journal policies to reflect better practices in scholarly publishing. Contact Chelsea Johnston for more information.

Template MOU

Every journal publisher must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the George A. Smathers Libraries in order to publish in Florida OJ.  The MOU provides details of the responsibilities and expectations of the Sponsoring Organization and the Libraries.

Online Tutorials

The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) offers free online training for OJS through the PKP School. We recommend Becoming an Editor, Setting up a Journal in OJS3, and Editorial Workflow in OJS3. Registration is required for the PKP School, but there is no charge; a fee is required if you want to earn a certificate of completion.

Florida OJ Publishers Round Table

George A. Smathers Libraries hosts the Florida OJ Publishers Round Table each semester to foster interdisciplinary networking of UF scholars using Florida OJ as a publishing platform. Contact Chelsea Johnston to be added to the Round Table mailing list.

Finding Your Liaison Librarian

Each UF academic field is served by a Liaison Librarian. This person can be a great resource for subject-specific questions about publishing. They can help facilitate meetings with the UF Florida OJ Service Team and, as subject specialists in your field(s), they may also be able to help recommend appropriate indexing for greater visibility of your publications.
