When you find an article you want to use for your research, save it to a citation manager that will help you organize and manage all of your citations.

Determine what citation style you need for your paper. You will use in-text citations and create a bibliography or list of references. Citation managers such as EndNote Basic and Mendeley can automatically format your paper to the citation style required.

Start with an outline:

1) What are the main points I am trying to make in this piece of writing?

2) What background information will my readers need to understand each point? What will novice readers vs. experienced readers need to know?

3) In what order do I want to present my ideas? Most important to least important, or least important to most important? Chronologically? Most complex to least complex? Another order?
