Overview of Carceral Studies

The purpose of this LibGuide is to introduce users to the field of carceral studies, which seeks to examine the state of the modern American criminal justice system. This guide highlights materials within the University of Florida's libraries that focus on the myriad topics within the field of carceral studies, such as abolition, mass incarceration, and prison labor. It also details a few national, state, and local resources that may be helpful to those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system or are interested in learning more. 

Censorship and Incarceration

While school districts and public libraries across the nation grapple with book challenges, the prison system faces a massive campaign to curtail intellectual freedom, as thousands of books are banned in prisons across the nation. With over 20,000 prohibited titles, Florida prisons lead the nation in number of books banned. The resources below contain detailed information about the state of censorship in prisons.
