Smartpens

This guide provides information about the Smartpens lending program, a collaboration between Library West and the UF Disability Resource Center (DRC) to provide DRC students with assistive technologies to help meet their learning and research needs.

How to borrow a Smartpen

To borrow a smartpen:

  1. First make sure you are registered with the UF Disability Resource Center (DRC).
  2. To request the smartpen, fill out the Equipment Loan Request Form on the DRC's website.
  3. If approved by the DRC, you will be asked by your Learning Specialist to complete the Audio/Video Recording Accommodation Agreement form and sign it via DocuSign.
  4. Once this is complete, the DRC will notify Library West of your request.
  5. You will receive an email from Library West when your smartpen kit is ready and available for checkout at the Library West Circulation Desk.
  6. Please bring your Gator 1 ID with you at the time of checkout.

The kit will include:

  • 1 Livescribe Echo smartpen with pen cap
  • 1 USB cable
  • 1 carrying case
  • 1 notebook

The notebook is made up of the special paper which is required by the smartpen.

Loan Period: Smartpens are loaned out for a full semester.

  • Due dates can be viewed on the student's library account.
  • For each day late, the fine is $1.
  • The replacement cost is $214.

Please take good care of all of the items in your kit.

Audio Recording: Students must follow the Audio Recording Agreement as provided by your Learning Specialist (and signed via DocuSign). It is the student's responsibility to communicate their intentions to record the lectures, whether that be via phone, Otter.ai or other applications to meet their needs.
