The legacy version of UFDC exhibits heightened sensitivity to the presence of Spanish accent marks in searches. Unlike the new UFDC version, it treats words with accents as distinct searches from their non-accent counterparts. Consequently, legacy UFDC yields fewer and less diverse search results, particularly when accent marks are involved.

Conversely, the new UFDC treats search terms with and without accents interchangeably. It displays results for both versions of a word, irrespective of the user's use of accents in the search.

The substantial difference in the number and variety of search results between the legacy and new UFDC versions can be attributed to the legacy version's limitation in performing full-text searches. This limitation persists even when using legacy UFDC's "text search" feature, which redirects users to the new version. In the legacy UFDC, search results seem to be based solely on whether the search term (including the accent) is present in the metadata or within the item's table of contents. Notably, the new UFDC's capability to generate search results through full-text checks contributes to its ability to produce a significantly larger and more diverse set of results compared to an identical search in the legacy version.
