The Cuban American Dream

The Cuban American Dream explored the reasons behind the immigration of Cubans to Florida from the 16th to the 21st century, the pressure that such immigration brought to local and state governments, the reactions of Floridian communities to Cuban immigrants, the ways in which Cuban immigrants adapted to their new reality, and the contribution of Cuban immigration to Florida.

Publication Date: 1817-1837
Landowner, Captain. Sebastián Pintado served as General Land Surveyor in Spanish Louisiana until its secession to France in 1803. He then served in the same capacity in Pensacola, the capital of Spanish West Florida until its session to the United States in 1821. Pintado also held the rank of infantry captain and owned considerable property in Louisiana and West Florida. He returned to Havana in 1821 and continued actively pursuing Florida land transactions. Pintado died in Havana in August of 1829.
Records and correspondence. Official records and correspondence of Vicente Sebastián Pintado, from 1817 to 1837. The letters and certifications in the collection pertain to land in Pensacola, Florida, and the liquidation of the estate of former Louisiana and West Florida Intendant Juan Ventura Morales. Also included is a lengthy diligencia on Pintado's own lands in Pensacola.

Plat, land grants. Plats of the city of Pensacola, Florida, dated December 12, 1817, by Spanish West Florida Surveyor General Vicente Sebastián Pintado. Includes Pensacola land grants of Gabriel Ribas and Francisco Menocal by Asst. Surveyor General Lt. Pedro Reggio dated December 18,1817 and a Baton Rouge land grant to Pearce Nolan surveyed by Pintado on July 4,1809.

Braga Brothers Collection
Records related to trade, manufacture, and cultivation of Cuban sugar. The records begin in the second half of the nineteenth century and end shortly after the nationalization of the Cuban sugar industry by the government of Fidel Castro. As a business archives, the Collection provides information on the manufacture and trade of Cuban sugar and the means by which Cuba's annual sugar harvest was financed and brokered. The collection provides descriptions of the social, political, and economic environment in which Cuban sugar was manufactured. The collection is an important source of data on the international sugar trade and the commercial and financial ties that once bound Cuba and the United States together.

D. Robert "Bob" Graham Political Papers
Records from the political career of D. Robert "Bob" Graham documenting his tenure as a Florida legislator, 1966-1978, and a United States Senator, 1987-2005. The collection also contains Graham's private papers and records from several commissions that Graham served on and also chronicles Graham's Workday experiences. Among the many record types, the collection contains correspondence, memoranda, press releases, speeches, articles, schedules and calendars, trip files, campaign materials, photographs and audiovisual materials. Major topics include education, environmental conservation, Florida economics, the savings and loan crisis, Everglades restoration, Hurricane Andrew, foreign affairs, and health care.
Lawton Chiles Senate Collection
Lawton Chiles, Jr. (1930-1999) was a Democratic politician who served in the Florida state legislature and the U.S. Senate. He served three terms in the Senate before retiring. He later ran for and won the Florida Governor's seat where he served until his death. Chiles is most known for his work on government reform (Government in the Sunshine Act) and environmental concerns (Big Cypress National Preserve, phosphate mining in Osceola National Forest), as well as being a strong advocate for youth and the elderly. The Lawton Chiles Senate Collection documents his election to the U.S. Senate in 1970 and his subsequent 18 years in Congress. Records of his state legislative work and any positions after his retirement from the Senate are largely absent from this collection.
