Getting Started at the library

  1. Set up the UF VPN: When you're off campus, you will need to use the UF VPN software to access electronic databases, journals and books.
  2. Search the library catalog for books, journals, and some articles: Links to online books and journals are also contained within the catalog.
  3. Check your account status or renew material. You can renew your books and check your library account from the catalog, after signing in with your Gator ID (click Sign In in top right corner).
  4. Search databases to find articles in journals: If you are trying to decide which database is appropriate for your research, look at the list of databases listed on the Journal Articles tab above.
  5. Create an Interlibrary Loan account. This will allow you to place requests for books and journal articles not owned by the UF Libraries. The ILL office will contact other borrowing libraries around the world to request your book or article. Journal articles are normally sent electronically.
  6. Attend a free workshop at the Library. Great instruction on a wide range of practical topics. See current offerings here.
  7. Enjoy the UF Libraries safely!  We have masks and hand sanitizer available. IDs are required after 10 pm. You can see real-time occupancy levels in the library branches here.

About the IR@UF

IR@UF banner

The Institutional Repository at the University of Florida (IR@UF), a service provided by the George A. Smathers Libraries, brings together the scholarly, research, and creative works of our academic community. In addition to offering a central collection location for materials, the IR@UF provides long-term preservation, enables worldwide dissemination, and encourages the development of new projects and partnerships. All scholarly works – including articles (pre-prints, post-prints, or published articles as permitted by the publishing agreement), books, book chapters, conference presentations, data sets, digital research files, and more – are welcome in the IR@UF. The IR@UF also provides access to historical materials from the University Archives, inviting explorations of the history, nature, and culture of the University of Florida.

The Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida acquire, manage, and preserve digital resources so they remain accessible to patrons over the long term. Certain limitations may be placed on access due to legal, donor and/or other reasons, but, in general, in so far as possible, the Smathers Libraries endeavor to make digital resources accessible to all users.
