The UF Libraries offer workshops each semester, many of them relevant to research impact. This includes workshops intended to promote the creation of high-quality manuscripts publishable in well-regarded, peer-reviewed journals; thereby broadening the reach, citability, and potential impact of this research.
Introduction to Research Impact – Online
This session will introduce some metrics commonly used to measure research impact. We will demonstrate where metrics can be found, discuss how they are used and issues related to their misuse, and suggest some steps you can take to improve your own impact.
How to Choose a Journal that Meets Your Needs – Online
This workshop will cover choosing a journal that reaches your audience, supports metrics of interest to you, and makes it easy to comply with federal funder mandates, if applicable.
Publish, Don’t Perish: Tools to make writing your article easier – Online
This session will be a broad introduction to writing a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. It will cover selecting a journal, types of articles, and locating appropriate reporting standards. Attendees wishing to take the next step and begin writing a manuscript for submission to a scholarly journal will be encouraged to take the most appropriate course in the Good Reporting Practices (GRPs) series for more in-depth coverage.
From First Draft to Published Article: Navigating the publishing process – Online
This session will cover the steps involved in getting a journal article published. The focus will be on the manuscript submission process including: choosing a journal for your article, submitting the manuscript, understanding editorial decisions, revising the manuscript based on reviewer comments, and approving final page proofs.
How to Write a Publishable Article using CONSORT – Online
This session is designed to teach attendees how to write a research article suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. It is particularly suited to those with clinical trial results to report, who are inexperienced at composing articles for publication. We will focus on using the CONSORT reporting standard as a blueprint to make writing the manuscript a clear-cut and attainable task. In addition, attendees can sign up to be part of a peer-writing group if they choose. Part of the Good Reporting Practices (GRPs) Series
Good Reporting Practices (GRPs) Series
A series of one-hour workshops designed to support early-career researchers in writing high-quality manuscripts publishable in peer-reviewed journals. Each workshop will focus on a particular reporting standard and its use as a blueprint to make writing a publishable manuscript a clear-cut and attainable task. In addition, each session may include 6- and 12-month follow-up surveys exploring whether attendees submitted a manuscript to a journal for publication. Attendees can also sign up to be part of a peer-writing group facilitated by the instructor, if they choose.
GRPs: Publishing a Clinical Trial with CONSORT – Online
This workshop will discuss the ICMJE recommendations regarding how to structure an article for a medical journal and the widely recognized standard for reporting trials, CONSORT. We will cover the 25-item CONSORT checklist, the explanation and elaboration article, and the flow diagram.
GRPs: Publishing a Study Protocol with SPIRIT – Online
The publication of study protocols promotes research transparency and reproducibility. This workshop will discuss the reporting standard for clinical trial protocols, Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials (SPIRIT). We will discuss the 33-item checklist as well as the schedule of enrollment, interventions, and assessments figure recommended by the SPIRIT Statement.
GRPs: Publishing a Case Report with CARE – Online
This workshop will cover the reporting standard for case reports, CARE, which provides a checklist of items to include when reporting clinical cases. We will also discuss additional useful resources, such as journals that publish case reports.
Additional workshops include:
Introduction to Researcher Profiles – Online
This session is a broad introduction to a number of researcher profile tools. We will show how they compare to each other and discuss why you might want to monitor more than one.
Research Integrity Issues Related to Publishing: Author responsibilities – Online
This session will discuss issues related to research integrity and the publication of journal articles. Topics will include authorship issues such as guest and ghost authors, complete and transparent reporting of trials, conflicts of interest including any role the sponsor played in deciding what to publish, and predatory publishing. We will look at some cases of misconduct and the repercussions, such as retractions, loss of funding, and damage to public trust in the research enterprise. The focus will be on resources that can inform ethical practices, such as ICMJE authorship criteria, reporting guidelines, and tools to help identify credible journals.
Avoiding Predatory Journals: Make your publication count – Online
This session will provide an introduction to predatory journals, why and how to avoid publishing in one, and cover ways to identify journals that best meet your publishing needs.
For those with NIH funding
NIH Public Access Policy Compliance: Change is here – Online
This workshop will focus on the recent changes to the NIH Public Access Policy and demonstrates how to fulfill compliance requirements. We will cover how to use the NIH Manuscript Submission System and discuss the various approaches of journal publishers towards compliance.
My NCBI Tools: My Bibliography and SciENcv – Online
This session will provide an overview of the My NCBI Home Page and explore two of the tools that can be found there: 1) My Bibliography, a tool for managing your publications and 2) SciENcv, a tool for creating your NIH biosketch.
Email tselfe1@ufl.edu to request a one-on-one consultation or a group presentation on any of these topics.
Each of these 20-30 minute workshops focus on a research impact metric or tool and provide step-by-step instructions which attendees can follow to accomplish a related task. The following three workshops are typically scheduled once each semester (semester schedule).
This workshop will cover creating your ORCID ID and linking it to Dimensions to add articles to your researcher profile with one click.
Demonstrating impact using Dimensions Analytics – Online
Explore how Dimensions Analytics can be used to help you demonstrate your research impact.
Demonstrating impact using Altmetric Explorer – Online
Explore alternative metrics in Altmetric Explorer and learn how they might be useful in demonstrating your research impact.
Additional workshops in the series are offered less frequently. Some topics related to research metrics include:
H-index – Online
This workshop will describe the H-index and show you how to find yours in Web of Science
Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) – Online
Find your Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) in iCite (good to know if you have NIH funding).
