Oral Histories from Latin America: Latina/o Diaspora in the Americas Project (LDAP), La Casita, and The History of the Jewish Community in El Salvador

The Institute of Hispanic/Latino Cultures advocates on behalf of Hispanic Latina/o populations and offers support to the University of Florida and the Gainesville community through various programs, resources, and networking opportunities in order to help facilitate cultural awareness, social justice, and empowerment. “La Casita” was established in 1994 and is the first institute of its kind in the south eastern United States, focusing on the empowerment of the Hispanic Latina/o community through Advocacy, Education, and Outreach.

The Latina/o Diaspora in the Americas Project, newly founded in 2014, is a growing, award-winning archive of 100+ oral histories dedicated to creating space for Latina/os to share their historical experiences related to identity, immigration reform, labor conditions, education, and civil rights.

The Latina/o Diaspora in the Americas Project currently lists 108 oral history interviews in its collection. Audio and interview transcripts can be accessed in the SPOHP offices.

The collection documents the community-building efforts of Jewish immigrants to El Salvador, some arriving in the 1920s and starting coffee plantations, and many more arriving after fleeing the Nazi occupation during WWII.
