Latin American & Caribbean Digital Initiatives

The Latin American Materials Project (LAMP) at the Center for Research Libraries received funds in 1994 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to explore aspects of digitization from microfilm. Working in cooperation with the Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, LAMP selected its collection of Brazilian government documents because of their scarcity, importance, and volume. Completed in December 2000, the project digitized more than 673,000 images of government publications, freely available over the web

The archival collections of nine historic women from Brazil have been made openly accessible by the Fundação Getulio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with financial support from the Center for Research Libraries. These collections contain more than 35,000 images curated by the Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil(link is external) (Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil), which is part of the Fundação Getulio Vargas

The US Government Documents about Cuba Collection is comprised of publications by the US government on the subject of Cuba. Materials will include treaties, agricultural research reports, maps and any other content discovered which documents the relationship of the United States Government with the nation of Cuba.

The Braga Brothers Collection is the gift of George Atkinson Braga and B. Rionda Braga to the University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries. Donated to the Libraries' Department of Special Collections in 1981, the collection is one of the richest archival sources on the modernization and expansion of the Cuban sugar industry. As the archive of a large North American company that did business in Cuba it provides insights to the unique commercial relationship that once existed between Cuba and the United States.

The University of Miami's Cuban Postcard Collection is a continuously growing collection of postcards of Cuba and the Cuban experience outside of Cuba produced from the turn of the 20th century to the present. It includes real photo, printed photo, and artist drawn postcards and provides views of many parts of the island as well as various aspects of Cuban communities in the United States and abroad

UCLA Libraries digitized radio broadcasts that aired in Cuba between 1949 and 1960. The broadcasts, recorded on lacquer disc, were shared by the Instituto de Historia de Cuba.

The Cuban Theater Digital Archive (CTDA) is a resource for research, teaching and learning in Cuban theater and performance from the University of Miami. The Digital Archive includes materials digitized and filmed in Cuba and outside the island as well as resources and information related to Cuban theater, with a special focus on theater produced by Cuban communities in the United States.

This project seeks to digitize over 500,000 pages of unique documents that record the history of the African diaspora in the seven oldest cities of Cuba.

The Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza Collections is a unique research collection at the Green Library at Florida International University Special Collections and University Archives which includes thousands of books, handwritten and typed letters, photos and other primary documents relating to Cuba and Cuban genealogy, collected over four decades by Felix Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza. The Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza Collection includes rare 17th and 18th century books, long out-of-print publications and periodicals that few, if any, U.S. libraries hold in their catalogs.

The Haitian Art Digital Archive (HADA) contributes to the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University's ongoing efforts to help preserve Haitian cultural patrimony, highlight the work of Haiti's cultural leaders, scholars and artists, and promote broad access to discussions about the Arts through the use of Haitian Creole.

Haitian Art: A Digital Crossroads (HADC) is an NEH Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant project by Grinnell College Libraries and the Waterloo Center for the Arts (WCA), led by Assistant Professor of Art History Fredo Rivera / Cultural & Community-based Digital Curator Petrouchka Moïse. The project also concerns itself with the state of Haitian art history, considering how the digital humanities can be used to think about Haitian art collections and resources globally. On this website, you will find information about the project, the process, and the people supported by this grant. HADC’s goal is to provide access to a comprehensive digital catalog of Haitian artists. By bringing together top scholars, museum professionals, and digital humanities experts working with Haitian art and culture, the HADC will provide access to a comprehensive catalog of contemporary Haitian masters and emerging arts.

Collection of the New York Public Library (NYPL). The collection consists of individual items and small groups of Haitian documents mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. It includes miscellaneous correspondence of Etienne Polvérel and Félicité Sonthonax, members of the Civil Commission sent by the French government to the Windward Islands "to restore order and tranquillity" in 1793, and of various Haitian heads of state, among them Nissage Saget (1874), Lysius Félicité Salomon (1883) and Tirésias Simon Sam (1897).

The Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National (ISPAN), founded in 1979, secured the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the Palace of Sans-Souci and Citadelle Henri built in the early 19th century after Haiti’s independence from France. This digital collection includes documentation on archaeological explorations, architectural designs, research publications from Haitian scholars, and photographs concerning Haiti’s monuments, structures, and cultural and historical sites throughout Haiti

The division of early nineteenth-century Haiti into two separately governed states led to the creation of competing printing presses under Henry Christophe in the north and Alexandre Pétion in the south and west. Here, you can journey through the northern government of Haiti’s official newspapers and explore its yearly almanacs.

The Archive of Haitian Religion and Culture: Collaborative Research and Scholarship on Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora contains rich primary materials of a central Haitian and Haitian-American spiritual tradition in order to promote discovery and educate a broad public. This collection provides content online for scholars and the public in the form of: Audiovisual content available as sound, photographic or video footage that is transcribed, translated, subtitled and explicated; Textual content available as facsimile, updated modernizations and translations; and, Critical syntheses such as commentary, exegesis, etymology, etc., available in English.

Collection of newspapers digitized by UF, available in dLOC

The Leonard Carpenter Panama Canal Collection primarily consists of photographs of Panama and the Panama Canal Zone during construction, beginning in 1914. The photographs show dredging and construction operations, workers, military personnel and camps, ships such as the U.S.S. Ohio, the dam at Pedro Miguel, an hydroelectric plant, locks, the Steamship Cristobal, Paraiso Yard, and a U.S. Navy dirigible. Several photos have captions identifying the persons, places and events shown. Most of the collection, particularly the photographs and items dated 1914 to 1929, originally were created or collected by Walter E. Boyd. He appears in a small number of the photographs, and two of the publications in the collection were mailed to him.

Documents of the Panama Canal Commission and Its Predecessor Agencies: As a Federal Depository Library, the Government Documents Department holds approximately 900 items published by the Federal Government relating to the planning for, building of and ongoing operation of the Panama Canal.

There are over 1000 molas, including molitas, panels, and full blouses, in the Panama Canal Museum Collection at the Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. Selections from the collection are presented here. Molas featured prominently in the 2014 exhibition, Patterns Past and Present: Arts of Panama, at the Harn Museum of Art. The exhibition was part of the campus wide celebration honoring the centennial of the opening of the Panama Canal.

Panama and the Canal is a rich collection of resources relating to the Panama Canal, the Canal Zone, and the Republic of Panama. The collection primarily includes materials from the University of Florida's Panama Canal Museum Collection, Latin American & Caribbean Collection, Map & Imagery Library, and government documents of the Panama Canal Commission and its predecessor agencies that are held in the Panama Canal Center of Excellence at UF.

The Panama and the Canal Oral Histories digital collection includes oral history interviews pertaining to the Panama Canal, the former Canal Zone, and the Republic of Panama. The collection of oral histories started as a joint project of the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries, the Panama Canal Museum, and the University of Florida Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Additional resources relating to the Panama Canal are available in the Panama and the Canal digital collection and in the Panama Canal Museum Collection at UF.

The Náñez-Woodward Collection of Panamanian Popular Art includes photographs by Peter Szok donated in honor of Dr. Ralph Lee Woodward, Jr. and Dr. Guillermo Náñez Falcón.

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center Digital Collection illustrates the rich history of the Juan Antonio Corretjer Puerto Rican Cultural Center (PRCC) in Chicago. The PRCC is a non-profit community based organization established in 1973 by the Puerto Rican and the Latina/o community in Chicago to address both the social and cultural needs of the community. The philosophy of the center emphasizes self-determination, self-actualization and the importance of critical thought. Housed at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Sixty-seven miscellaneous slave documents listing individual slaves, their physical characteristics, and ownership. Most of the slaves belonged to smaller households in the northeast part of the island, and many were young children. Housed at New York Public Library (NYPL).

The digital collection Puerto Rico at the Dawn of the Modern Age: Nineteenth- and Early-Twentieth-Century Perspectives is one component of a collaborative project undertaken by the Library of Congress Hispanic Division and the National Digital Library Program to recognize the centennial of the Spanish-American War (1898). Puerto Rico at the Dawn of the Modern Age encompasses historically important writings by prominent Puerto Rican political activists and historians dating from approximately seventy years before the Spanish-American war (1831) until some thirty years after it (1929).

The collection is drawn from Mexico’s two principal security services, the Dirección Federal de Seguridad (DFS) and the Dirección General de Investigaciones Políticas y Sociales (DGIPS) and covers the period c.1940 to c.1985.
