Standards

A standard, as defined by the National Standards Policy Advisory Committee, is:

"A prescribed set of rules, conditions, or requirements concerning definitions of terms; classification of components; specification of materials, performance, or operations; delineation of procedures; or measurement of quantity and quality in describing materials, products, systems, services, or practices."

ASTM Standards

Available online via ASTM Compass. Print versions of the 2012 Annual Book of ASTM Standards are in the Science Library (4th floor) TA401 .A653. Many older ASTM standards can be retrieved from storage (FLARE).

IEEE Standards

IEEE standards are available through IEEExplore along with other scholarly and technical literature such as peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and technical reports.

Incorporated By Reference Portal

The Incorporated by Reference (IBR) portal provides access to a variety of standards that have been incorporated by reference in the U.S. Code of federal Regulations (CFR) are offered at no cost in “read only” format for online reading. There are no print or download options. You may also find NIST's Standards Incorporated by Reference (SIBR) Database helpful to locate standards that have been cited or incorporated by reference into the CFR.

NASA Standards

The NASA Technical Standards System is a key element of the NASA Technical Standards Program (NTSP), sponsored by the Office of the NASA Chief Engineer. It provides access to technical standards from specifically contracted Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) at no direct cost to the user via electronic subscription delivery and on a pay-per-document approval basis. While the service is at no cost to the user, however, justification of need and program or project supported for the pay-per-document is carefully considered before the request is approved by the NTSP Manager or designee, as this is an additional cost to the Program.

NFPA Standards

National Fire Protection Association standards. Under codes and standards drop down menu, look for the link Free access.

UL Standards

Underwriters Laboratory standards. Under UL Alternative Documents link, you can read them for free online via the Digital View option (free account required).

ANSI University Outreach Program for Standards

As the U.S. member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ANSI has been authorized to provide, upon request, complimentary access for students and faculty to selected standards currently available in the ISO collection. Certain standards from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) may also be made available upon request. These collections are comprised of nearly 20,000 standards, which can be made available to U.S. faculty and students in all disciplines in institutions of higher learning throughout the United States.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has also authorized access to a collection of dental standards upon request.
