Burning Spear Media in the UFDC

A guide to the digitized content from Burning Spear Media in the University of Florida's Digital Collections

The Burning Spear Newspaper

The Burning Spear has been in continuous publication since its first issue in 1969. It is the official journal of the African People's Socialist Party and features news and analysis of events impacting the lives of African people in the U.S. and around the world.

In 2019, the George A. Smathers Libraries partnered with Burning Spear Media to digitize their newspaper holdings from 1969-2019 for inclusion in the Florida Digital Newspaper Library (FDNL).

By January 2021, the Digital Services team completed the digitization of 315 issues of the Burning Spear newspaper, alongside three issues of the Florida Black Voice. The Burning Spear Media team has also shared born-digital newspaper issues from 2019 – 2023, taking the collection to over 360 issues.
