Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

  • Complementary:  This type of non-traditional medicine is applied in conjunction with traditional western medical practice
  • Alternative:  This type of non-traditional medicine is applied instead of traditional western medical practice
  • Integrative: This type of non-traditional medicine coordinates non-traditional medicine and traditional, treating the whole person and their mental, emotional, spiritual, and community health. 

Types of CAM:

Manipulative and body-based therapies 

Examples include:

  • Chiropractic
  • Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT)
  • Massage therapy

Mind-body therapies

Examples include:

  • Meditation
  • Benson’s relaxation response
  • Meditative movement practices (tai chi, qigong)

Biologically-based therapies 

Examples Include:

  • Herbal and nutritional medicine

Energy therapies 

Examples include:

  • Healing Touch
  • Reiki
  • Therapeutic Touch

Alternative health systems

Examples Include:

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, Chinese herbs)
  • Ayurvedic Medicine
