Tips on Scientific Writing

The following books on writing are available through the Health Science Libraries' Catalog:

Citation Tools

Citation management software makes it possible to store your citations so that you can easily access them and format them for writing. This software can assist you to develop bibliographies, cite references in text, and build personal collection of useful literature.

University of Florida provides FREE access to RefWorks and EndNote Web for students, faculty, and staff.


RefWorks:  This web-based resource is available with free registration through the UF libraries  Import citations directly from the UF catalog and many databases.


EndNote Web:  Also known as EndNote Basic or EndNote Online, this web-based resource is available with free registration through the UF libraries.  Import citations directly from many databases.


EndNote:  The gold-standard of bibliographic management, this desktop tool is available for purchase.  Import citations directly from many databases and synchronize with your EndNote Web account.


Zotero: This Firefox extension is available for free download.  Work from within your web-browser to import citations from the web, tag and search them.

Help With Citation Styles

The instructions for authors provided on journal websites typically specifiy which citation style should be used. If you have questions, please contact your liaison librarian.
 
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) guide to proper citation formats for medical and scientific materials.
 
The ICMJE Uniform Requirements are followed by many biomedical and scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine.
 
The American Medical Association citation style is used by many journals, including JAMA.  To access the book online, click the "Contents" tab on the left-hand side of the blue bar.
