This page provides just a sample of all the apps that could prove useful to you in your classes and clinicals.  For more apps that we recommend, check out our Mobile Resources for Health libguide!

You can also find reviews on many apps on third party sites.  Keep in mind there is always a certain level of bias in any review so it is a good idea to gather opinions from multiple sources. iMedicalApps.com or this article from Digital Trends are great places to get started.

Apps for Clinical Care Support

  UpToDate

UpToDate, a clinical support tool available through UF, offers an app to provide better evidence-based clinical diagnosis tools. You will need to create an UpToDate account from within the web application (while connected to the VPN or on a campus computer), and use it to log in to the app.  After logging in to the app the first time, the UpToDate app will remain logged in to your account for easier access in the future.  

Apps for Journal Articles

 PubMed Mobile 

This is the mobile version of PubMed and provides a view of the "more than 22 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher websites."

 

 PubMed® for Handhelds

This application features multiple ways to search PubMed/MEDLINE: PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome); askMEDLINE, a free-text, natural language search; and Consensus Abstracts. Apple iOS app includes these options as well as BabelMeSH which has search options in 13 languages.

 

EBSCO

This application provides access to all the databases available through EBSCOhost, including CINAHL and PsycInfo. 

 

 New England Journal of Medicine 

This application contains recent research articles, reviews, commentary, and case materials. It also images, audio, and video from Images in Clinical Medicine.

Apps for Patient Education

MedlinePlus screenshotMedlinePlus

MedlinePlus provides health information for patients and families. The mobile website covers diseases, conditions, medications, wellness topics, and the latest health news. It is available in both English and Spanish.

Apps for Drug Information

mobileMicromedex 2.0

Drug Information is a free resource, providing drug and clinical information, from Micromedex. An internet connection is not required to access the information. Micromedex also offers Drug Interactions and IV Compatibility apps for Apple and Android devices. These apps are free to UF users--to set up the app, follow the instructions on the page linked below. (You will need to be logged into the VPN to complete the setup process on your device)

Epocrates

The free basic version of Epocrates provides drug, disease, and diagnostic information at the point of care. There is a seperate premium app--Epocrates Essentials--that features additional content, including evidence-based disease monographs. The premium version costs $159.99 per year.

Apps for Citation Management

RefMobile

RefMobile allows for easy access to the RefWorks databases and organization of references. A RefWorks account is free for students and faculty using the University of Florida institutional code.

 

EndNote for iPad

EndNote's app only works for the iPad, but allows you to sync your EndNote library on your desktop, iPad, and online. Endnote Web is free for students and faculty affiliated with the University of Florida; desktop versions of EndNote can be purchased separately.

Apps for e-Books

This app provides access to eBooks through the library's subscription to STAT!Ref including Essential Evidence (EE+), AHFS Drug Essentials, Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, and more.


 AccessMedicine 
The mobile version of AccessMedicine provides access to several medical textbooks, diagnostic tools, drug monographs, and more through the library's subscription to AccessMedicine. You must set up a My AccessMedicine account to access it from your mobile device. There is no downloadable app, but if you log in to the mobile website from your device, you can add it to your home screen/applications.

Apps for Learners/Students

Mental Case

Mental Case is a flashcard app that allows for embedding of images and videos.  It is available for iOS and Mac.

 

 StudyBlue

This flashcard app also allows for embedding images and videos.  Free and paid versions available - paid version allows use of other users' content. Available for iOS and Android.

 

 Quizlet

Create flashcards, quizzes, and other study tools. Available for iOS and Android.

 

Visual Anatomy/Visual Anatomy Free

Interactive anatomy modules useful students.  Available for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows.

Apps for Scheduling and Note Taking

Evernote

With Evernote, you can save notes, pictures, and even web pages remotely and access them anywhere on any Evernote-enabled device.  Available for free, but there are also paid subscriptions with more features.

 

Microsoft OneNote

OneNote is very similar to EndNote in that both allow you to save notes, pictures, audio, video, and webpages remotely and then access them online or through any OneNote device.

 

Remember the Milk

Remember the Milk is a scheduling assistant.  It allows you to access and edit your appointments from just about anywhere.
