Hello and Welcome from Angie, Your Librarian

Welcome! My name is Angie Price (she/her) and I am the biological & life sciences librarian at Marston Science Library and the liaison librarian for the Animal Sciences, Biology, Botany, and Zoology departments. I came to UF in 2023 to share my passion for biology, animals, and libraries, and I am here to help students with both.

This guide contains recommendations and resources for information and research in the animal and plant names and taxonomy, as well as information on using the libraries, improving your researching skills, and helping you with assignments, projects, and interests. This guide contains a lot of information, but if you have any additional questions, I would love to help answer them!

Online Resources

Animal Diversity Web
The Animal Diversity Web is an online database and encyclopedia of animal natural history, built through contributions from students, photographers, and many others. It is a rich and flexible resource designed both as an encyclopedia for exploring biodiversity and for use in formal, inquiry-based education.
Birds of the World
Birds of the World engages the global ornithological community to create the most in-depth, science-based content to illustrate the life histories of birds and bird families.
Encyclopedia of Life
We work with open access biodiversity knowledge providers around the world, including museums and libraries, universities and research centers, individual scientists, graduate students and citizen science communities, and a suite of international open data hubs.
Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia
A completely revised and updated version of the original work published in Germany in 1960, this edition incorporates recent developments in the animal world as noted by prominent advisors and contributors from the scientific community.
Species 2000
Species 2000 is an autonomous federation of taxonomic database custodians, involving taxonomists throughout the world. Our goal is to collate a uniform and validated index to the world's known species (plants, animals, fungi and microbes).

UF-Specific Resources

Division of Plant Industry
As a regulatory branch of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Division of Plant Industry works to detect, intercept and control plant and honey bee pests that threaten Florida’s native and commercially grown plants and agricultural resources.
Florida Museum of Natural History
Housing collections that have grown to 40 million specimens and artifacts, the Florida Museum is one of the top three university-based natural history museums in the nation with active collecting, research and teaching programs.
Herbarium
The University of Florida Herbarium is the oldest (est. 1891) and largest herbarium in Florida with approximately 500,000 specimens. It is the 4th largest herbarium in the southeastern United States.
