Wilmot Botanical Gardens https://wilmotgardens.med.ufl.edu/

Craig Tisher, MD

Leah Diehl

The Wilmot Gardens were created in 1950 in memory of Royal James Wilmot and housed rare camellias donated in honor of Mr. Wilmot.  After years of garden neglect, Dr. C. Craig Tisher began a continuing process of revitalization and transformation starting in 2006.  Since that time the gardens have flourished as a botanical garden and as a growing locus of horticultural therapy programing at the University of Florida.  Working with the gardens and in the greenhouse, the programs reach numerous individuals, and the program works with varied groups including veterans, students, children on the autism spectrum, cancer patients.  Outreach and training opportunities include coursework, volunteer opportunities, internships and other programs with the possibility for focus on different Wilmot programs including work in and running of botanical gardens as well as therapeutic horticulture programs.

Counseling and Wellness Center- Calming Anxiety in Nature. 352-392-1575 Calming Anxiety with Nature (CAN)  This counseling group has been consistently offered through the UF Counseling and Wellness Center, each Fall and Spring, ever since 2020. Time in nature, as well as mindfulness meditations, have been shown to increase well-being and to help with navigating loneliness, anxiety and stress. Our meetings include nature-based meditations, emotional expression, expanded perspectives, interpersonal feedback, and support for challenging life circumstances. We meet outside, walk together to one of the many beautiful natural settings on campus, and sit in camping chairs in a circle. We provide various anxiety relieving strategies, as well as space for members to connect with themselves, one another, and the environment. For further information on this program and options available for students, see the document link below.
