Classical Studies

Rare Classics Books

The University of Florida owns hundreds of rare books pertaining to classical studies and houses them in climate-controlled shelving in Smathers Library. They can be accessed by request at the circulation desk of the Grand Reading Room on the second floor during library hours (see the Special and Area Studies Collections website for more information).

Please feel free to contact  Megan Daly, the Librarian of Classics, Philosophy, and Religion, or Neil Weijer, Curator of the Harold & Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection, with any questions about the Latin and Greek rare books.

A finding aid has been created to help readers discover the Latin and Greek rare books and several books have been digitized and can be viewed online.

You can also learn more about the collection by visiting the Medieval and Renaissance Books page and the "Explore the Collection" page.

Displays of rare classics books are often created for special events, like visits of the Summer Latin Institute. Below please find the bibliographies of our recent rare classics books displays.
