Corpora

Look through the tabs here to find selected corpora.

They are organized based on the geographical location of the language(s) within the corpus. If the corpus applies to a wide variety of places, or has multiple languages, it is in the worldwide tab.

Many of the selected links come from Non-English, Parallel & Multilingual Corpora, originated by David Lee and now maintained by Martin Weisser.

American Sign Language

Boston University's American Sign Language Linguistic Research Project
The ASLLRP includes investigation of the syntactic structure of American Sign Language and the relationship of syntax to semantics and prosody, development of multimedia tools to facilitate access to and analysis of primary data for sign language research, and collaboration with computer scientists interested in problems involved in computer-based recognition and generation of signed languages.

Canadian French

Le corpus BAF: Un corpus de bitextes anglais-français
En Français: Le BAF (Bitexts anglais-français) est un corpus de bitextes anglais-français, c'est-à-dire un ensemble de paires de documents anglais et français, traductions l'un de l'autre, dont les phrases ont été "alignées".

English: The BAF is a corpus of french-english bitexts. A bitext is a translated document where the text of the two languages is aligned. It is run by the Université de Montréal.

Spoken American English

American English Dialect Recordings: The Center for Applied Linguistics Collection
118 hours of recordings documenting North American English dialects. The recordings include speech samples, linguistic interviews, oral histories, conversations, and excerpts from public speeches. They were drawn from various archives, and from the private collections of fifty collectors, including linguists, dialectologists, and folklorists.
Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA)
The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) is the largest freely-available corpus of English, and the only large and balanced corpus of American English. The corpus was created by Mark Davies of Brigham Young University, and it is used by tens of thousands of users every month (linguists, teachers, translators, and other researchers).
Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English
The Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English is based on a large body of recordings of naturally occurring spoken interaction from all over the United States. The Santa Barbara Corpus represents a wide variety of people of different regional origins, ages, occupations, genders, and ethnic and social backgrounds. The predominant form of language use represented is face-to-face conversation, but the corpus also documents many other ways that that people use language .

Written American English

Corpus of TIME Magazine Articles, 1923-2007
This website allows you to quickly and easily search more than 100 million words of text of American English from 1923 to the present, as found in TIME magazine.
Michigan Corpus Linguistics
Here you will find three different corpora: the Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English, the Michigan Corpus of Upper-Level Student Papers, the John Swayles Conference Corpus, and other materials for students and researchers.

Basque

Basque Spoken Corpus
This is a collection of forty two narratives in the Basque language (Euskara) by native speakers. It includes sound files (MP3 format) and full detailed transcripts. Each of the narratives is a recounting of a short, silent movie that the speaker has just watched to a friend or acquaintance who has not seen the movie.

British English

British National Corpus
The British National Corpus (BNC) is a 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, designed to represent a wide cross-section of British English, both spoken and written, from the late twentieth century.
Edinburgh University Speech Timing Archive and Corpus of English
4608 spoken sentences, spoken by six speakers of British English, designed to examine a number of durational effects in speech and controlled for length and phonetic content.

Italian

BADIP: BAnca Dati dell'Italiano Parlato
BADIP is a free access website of the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (Austria) that publishes corpora for the analysis and the study of spoken Italian.

Written French

ABU : la Bibliothèque Universelle (de l'Association des Bibliophiles Universels)
En Français: L'accès libre au texte intégral d'oeuvres du domaine public francophone sur Internet depuis 1993.

English: the Universal Library (from the Association of Universal Bibliophiles) | access to the textbook of integral works in the francophone public domain, online since 1993.
ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of French Language)
ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of French Language) provides access to North America's largest collection of digitized French resources. It consists of nearly 3,000 texts, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts.

Indigenous Languages

The Aboriginal Studies Electronic Data Archive (ASEDA)
The Aboriginal Studies Electronic Data Archive (ASEDA) holds computer-based (digital) materials about Australian Indigenous studies collected from the late 80’s to early 2009 by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). The majority of items in ASEDA are about Australian Indigenous languages (dictionaries, grammars, teaching materials, etc.) AIATSIS distributes these materials on behalf of the depositor/provider of these materials. Availability of materials is subject to depositors/providers' access conditions and often requires permission from the depositor/provider. This catalogue describes items held by ASEDA.

Arabic

The Quranic Arabic Corpus
An annotated linguistic resource which shows the Arabic grammar, syntax and morphology for each word in the Holy Quran. The corpus provides two levels of analysis: morphological annotation and a syntactic treebank.

English

IDEA: International Dialects of English Archive
All recordings are in English, are of native speakers, and you will find both English language dialects and English spoken in the accents of other languages.

Spanish

La Base de Datos Sintácticos del español actual (BDS)
The Syntactic Database for modern Spanish (BDS) contains about 160,000 clauses (1.5 m words) of Spanish with syntactic analysis (manually added), from the corpus ARTHUS (Archivo de Textos Hispánicos de la Universidad de Santiago). Composition: 66.5% written (narratives, essays and journalistic texts), 14.7% drama and 18.9% oral transcriptions. The syntactically annotated corpus is avaliable for free (only for reseach purposes) via the web, through an user-friendly interface (only in Spanish).
