Employees and student employees should not eat, smoke, and/or vape around books or paper. This includes eating candy and chewing gum. (See Pest Management section for a more in-depth discussion about eating and drinking). Students and researchers are allowed to eat in our circulation branch libraries, but students and other researchers are no longer allowed to eat food in the Smathers Library Building anywhere. Students and researchers are not allowed to bring any food and/or drinks into the Grand Reading Room. The only exception for food in the Grand Reading Room is for specific events with administration (dean) approval.
Employees should not keep, make, or eat their lunches and/or snacks at their desks or in their offices. Foods should only be kept and consumed in break rooms away from collection items or in the conference rooms on the first floor of the Smathers Library. Employees should only eat in break rooms or food-designated areas at ALF, ILF1, and ILF 2. It is not acceptable to eat at your desk in these buildings--especially if you handle collection items.
Anyone bringing snacks, liked baked goods, for their teams should not leave these foods anywhere but the break room. Again, these communal snacks should be placed in break rooms for people to snack on as desired. Again, preservation can help sort out issues.
Water bottles can be used around library materials, but they should be kept on the floor or away from the materials as much as possible. These bottles should have a secure cap that avoids spilling. Bottles and cups with straws on the top can spill and are not allowed so employees will need to transfer any drink from these containers into bottles in break rooms before entering their collection/work areas. Avoid any containers that cause condensation on the outside of the bottle. Water bottles are not allowed on any of the tables in the Grand Reading Room but instead kept at the entrance with the rest of the students' items. Only make drinks in break rooms--keep all drink making machinery in break rooms and not in offices or personal spaces.
See the section The Building Environment: Integrated Pest Management for more information.
Garbage containers in areas where students are studying should be changed out regularly.
Employees should discard food packaging and/or waste in break room garbage cans only. Avoid throwing food-related packaging and waste anywhere else. This includes any drink containers.
Conference rooms should have their waste bins cleaned out immediately after a library event involving food.
See the section Building Environment: Integrated Pest Management for more details.
