Stack Management-Marston Science Library

The following is a list of tasks this department is responsible for:

  • Shelve books and periodicals
  • Shelf-read the stacks while shelving to ensure heavily used areas are in order
  • Assist in some physical labor projects that call for the moving of furniture, shelving parts, other heavy items, etc.
  • Identify items that need new call number labels
  • Assist with the production of new call number labels
  • Identify materials that are in need of repair/preservation
  • Collect items that have been used within the library
  • Collect statistics on item usage
  • Maintain the order of the reshelving carts
  • Maintain the cleanliness and order of stacks 
  • Identify end panel labels that need to be replaced
  • Identify areas of the collection that may need shifting due to lack of growth room
  • Assist with the planning of shifting projects
  • Help carry out shifting projects
  • Assist patrons in locating call numbers within the stacks
  • Refer patrons to the Service Desk for questions when you do not know the answer
  • Identify and report building problems
  • Assist patrons with the operation of the compact shelving
  • Assist librarians in weeding the stacks when necessary
  • Report strange patron behavior
  • Assist with collections projects
  • Search items in the library catalog and help to verify and correct item records
  • Work with Microsoft Excel and Google Documents on a variety of stacks projects
  • Other projects and duties as assigned 
  • Student supervisors supervise the work of other student assistants and manage the workflow on their respective projects

These are not all daily activities and some tasks will be assigned to individual employees.

New employees will first concentrate on the tasks outlined in the "Daily Routine" page of this website. Once trained and familiar with the library, new tasks will be assigned.
