The Concept

The Journal Retention and Needs Listing (JRNL) is a program that:

  • Allows libraries to expose lists of print journals for which they have made retention commitments;
  • Express needs (or gaps) in their holdings; and
  • Communicate offers to fill the gaps in other participating libraries’ holdings.

The JRNL is used by multiple library consortia and their member libraries to facilitate communication between library staff to identify holding commitments, facilitate deselection decisions, and fill gaps.
