Copy of Preservation Guidelines for Circulating Branch Libraries

Exhibit Cases in Circulating Libraries

Exhibit Cases should be in the most environmentally stable areas of the libraries if these cases hold collection items.  This includes keeping the cases out of direct sunlight and out of the direct path of doors that open to the outside.  Avoid placing them up against outside walls or along spaces that do not have good HVAC airflow.  If this is not possible, consider displaying facsimiles instead of actual items.  Light damage can be immediate so damage can occur even if the exhibit is only for a short period of time.  Contact preservation for assistance if you are planning to move cases.

Exhibit cases should be physically stable and have appropriate security features, but they also should have practical access design for reentry and continued use.  Cases should be vented as appropriate and should be able to also house desiccants and/or pollutant absorbers as appropriate.

Exhibit cases should be cleaned inside and out during the set-up process.  A mix of de-ionized water and isopropyl alcohol is best.  Avoid cleaners with high VOCs.  Make sure exhibit cases are completely dry before placing items in and locking the cases.

Art Placement

Like exhibit cases, most art should not be placed up against outside walls or in direct sunlight.

Framed art is especially susceptible to temperature and humidity fluctuations and should be placed in interior areas with good airflow.  Hardware and walls should be inspected to ensure that everything will hold, and items will not be damaged due to falling.  Security tags, brackets, pins, alarms, screws, etc. should not be readily visible.

Art should also be protected via acrylic sheeting if it is close to a high traffic area.  Sculptural art--particularly metal--can withstand greater shifts in humidity but are highly susceptible to damage via touch so should stay out of high traffic areas.
