The Buckingham Smith Papers (New York Historical Society) [PKY Microfilm   ]

Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871) was a lawyer, diplomat, antiquarian, and author. Throughout his life, Smith was a devoted student of North American history, specifically Spanish colonialism and Native American cultures and languages. During the 1850-1860s, Smith translated and edited several publications, including Colección de varios documentos para la historia de la Florida y tierras adyacentes (1857),  A grammatical sketch of the Heve language (1861),  Narratives of the career of Hernando de Soto in the conquest of Florida (1866), and  Relation of Alvar Nunez Cabeca de Vaca (1871).

 

The Jeannette Thurber Conner Papers (Library of Congress) [ PKY Microfilm  ]

Jeannette Thurber Connor (1872-1927) became interested in the early history of Florida after her investigation into a Spanish mission site found on the Florida estate of her husband Washington Everett Connor.   She was co-founder with John B. Stetson, Jr. (1884-1952) of the Florida State Historical Society in 1921. Among the volumes Connor translated and edited for the series were Pedro Menéndez de Avilés: Memorial by Gonzalo Solis de Merás (De Land, Fla.: Florida State Historial Society, 1923); Colonial Records of Spanish Florida, 2 vols. (De Land, Fla.: Florida State Historial Society, 1925 and 1930); and The Whole and True Discouerye of Terra Florida (De Land, Fla.: Florida State Historial Society, 1927). 

 

Woodbury Lowery Collection (Library of Congress) [PKY Microfilm   ]

Woodbury Lowery (1853-1906), a Washington patent lawyer and historian, published The Spanish Settlements Within the Present Limits of the United States (New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1905).  The Manuscript Division has eighteen volumes of his notes and transcripts.  His map collection is also at the Library of Congress.
