Stack Management-Marston Science Library

Two tasks that you are responsible for on a daily basis are Shelf Reading and Blocking.

  • Shelf reading is when you read every call number on a shelf to ensure that it is in the proper order.
  • You are responsible for shelf reading as you shelve. This ensures that areas receiving the most use are kept tidy.
  • Blocking is when you have each book lined up with the edge of the shelf, and all books are standing upright with a book end placed at the end of each shelf.
  • You should block as you shelf read and vice versa.
  • Feel free to shelf read with a partner. This can help to make the process less monotonous. Just make sure to keep your voices down so as to not disturb patrons.
