Cataloging-in-Publication (CIP) Procedures and Data for LibraryPress@UF Titles

The LibraryPress@UF (https://librarypress.domains.uflib.ufl.edu/) publishes a number of titles each year. Staff at the Press send the RDS department information prior to publication so that RDS staff can create Cataloging-in-Publication (CIP) data to be included in the work at the time of publication.

Specific data from the work needs to be part of the CIP for each publication.

More information, including the components of the CIP data block, can be found at the Library of Congress' website: https://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/techinfo/cipdata.html. Additionally, a presentation sponsored by ALCTS contains information on the data block and what needs to be included in the CIP. A recording and slides from the presentation can be found at https://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/101415.

Once the publication information is received from the Press staff, a RDS cataloger creates a CIP for the item and sends it to the Press staff member making the request. The CIP is then included in their publication.

Essentially, the data block consists of labels for various data components. Sections within each component are separated by a vertical bar symbol ("pipe") when needed. The component labels are: Name(s), Title(s), Other title(s), Description, Identifier(s), Subjects, and Classification. RDS staff assign LCC classification numbers only for Press publications.
