What to Put on the Conservation Shelf: Education, LACC and AFA*

IMPORTANT NOTE: Apart from music scores, the following treatments only apply to new, previously unused items, or items already containing conservation slips filled out by the selector (these will primarily be gifts). New policy states that all older/used items should be cataloged and sent to their owning locations regardless of their condition. If unsure about an item, please check with your supervisor.

*Currently, send scores with loose parts, pamphlet scores or staple-bound scores to Conservation.  (subject to change after hire of new music librarian).

Weak spiral binding Flat "Comb" spirals, or "Velo" bindings (items with sturdy plastic or metal spirals no longer need to go to Conservation) Yes Yes
Errata present Slip errata piece inside the cover – if worried it might fall out, place book in an envelope. Avoid paperclips if possible. Yes Yes
Stapled binding Staples may be covered; please check for staples. (Check with supervisor or Conservation first if over 50 pages - uncommon) Yes Yes
Needs repair Item has significant damage - brittle pages coming loose, cover badly torn, etc. Yes Yes
Soft cover volume with media Item has a sound disc, DVD or CD-ROM. Check with supervisor if item has an audio cassette, computer floppy disk or other legacy media. Yes Yes
Hard cover volume with loose media Item has a sound disc, DVD or CD-ROM that does not have a sturdy pocket. Check with supervisor if item has an audio cassette, computer floppy disk or other older media. Yes Yes

When an item in one of the above categories is a RUSH item, do NOT place it on the binding shelf.

  • Place a piggyback barcode on the back of the title page or other location away from the cover
  • Make a call number label for the item.
  • Add the “RUSH: send to Preservation after circulating” slip..
  • Send the item to the proper owning location ASAP.
  • If a rush item requires immediate Preservation attention, check with your supervisor.
