What to Put on the Conservation Shelf: Library West and Marston Science Library

Updated August 2022 by Sam Fraleigh

What to Put on the Conservation Shelf: Library West and Marston Science Library

Library West and Marston Science Library require that sound discs, CD-ROMs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs be placed in separate, barcoded cases. Items with this type of media are never sent to Preservation solely because of the non-print accompanying media.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The following treatments only apply to new, previously unused items, or items already containing conservation slips filled out by the selector (these will primarily be gifts). New policy states that all older/used items should be cataloged and sent to their owning locations regardless of their condition. If unsure about an item, please check with your supervisor.

When an item in one of the above categories is a RUSH item, do NOT place it on the binding shelf.

  • Place a piggyback barcode on the back of the title page or other location away from the cover
  • Make and apply a call number label for the item.
  • Add the “RUSH: send to Preservation after circulating” slip.
  • Send the item to the proper owning location ASAP.
  • If a rush item requires immediate Preservation attention, check with your supervisor.
