Bound With and "Published With" Volumes
Definition. There are two kinds of "bound with" publications:
PUBLISHER bound - Separately published titles that were bound and issued together afterwards by the publisher in a separate edition.
PRIVATELY bound - Separately published titles that were privately bound together after publication by their owner.
For Publisher bound volumes
Those issued by a publisher *with a collective title* will be cataloged on one bibliographic record according to normal cataloging procedures. "Bound with" procedures described below will not apply. Example: The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Those issued by a publisher *without collective title* will be cataloged on separate bibliographic records. "Bound with" procedures described below will apply. (See II. below). Example: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King (in a single volume).
For volumes “Bound without collective title”, and “Privately Bound”, please follow these "Bound with" procedures.
Publisher Bound without collective title, and Privately Bound. (NOT Rare Books)
Search all titles in the volume in ALMA
I) Create provisional records in the IZ as needed.
II) Download and overlay the provisional records with OCLC records wherever possible.
III) If no OCLC copy is found, create original record in OCLC and overlay IZ record and proceed to step (2) below
(A) on the bib records for a publisher bound work, the primary and each secondary title, add the following local extensions (Alt-L) in ALMA. Add as a 591 local extension "With" note to indicate the other "bound or published with" titles, in the form:
591 With: Title / Author. Place of publication : Publisher, Date.
(B) On the secondary titles, add a 773 field to link the titles with the first work. See https://guides.uflib.ufl.edu/rds-uf/lkr for instructions for 773s.
NOTE: the 591 note on the bib record for the primary title will list all of the other (secondary) titles occurring in the volume, but the 773s will provide a link from the secondary works to the item and holdings records for the first work.
EXAMPLE:
Three works are originally separate publications, but have since been bound together.
